Who we are?

Pi Sigma Alpha, the Political Science Honors Society, is a student organization affiliated with the BYU Political Science Department. With various activities throughout the year, PSA offers opportunities to meet other students and forge relationships with professors while discussing political issues in a variety of settings.

Who can join?

There are two forms of membership:
Chapter Membership:

Anyone with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better who has taken (or is currently taking) at least one social science course. All majors welcome. Applications accepted year round. Chapter Membership must be renewed annually.

National Membership
Applicants must be at least juniors or seniors, have an overall GPA of 3.5 (and a major GPA of 3.0), and have completed at least one course at the 300 level or above. Applications for National Membership are accepted annually, around the middle of winter semester. National Membership is considered lifetime membership in Pi Sigma Alpha.

How to join:

Go the Political Science Department Office (7 th floor of the SWKT). Ask the secretaries for an application and submit it to the secretaries along with the $10.00 fee (paid annually). Applications are also available online: see the link to the left. These should be submitted in the same fashion.

What are we up to?

The most up to date information of PSA events can be found on the bulletin boards on the 7 th floor of the SWKT or in the SWKT lobby. Flyers are posted for all events. PSA generally hosts 3-4 activities a month. Our activities include:

Opening and Closing Socials

Oktoberfest - Fall Semester gathering for students and professors and their families at Timp Lodge near Sundance usually involving a faculty skit, dinner, and games

Speak Out Debates - Monthly student debates on recent political topics

Welches and Cheese - Monthly gatherings at a professor's home where a professor discusses their research and interests with a small group of students and refreshments are served (sometimes even Welches grape juice and cheese…)

Annihilation Cup - a PSA sponsored debate between College Republicans and College Democrats

Closing PSA Banquet – a formal sit-down dinner followed by a distinguished speaker, held at the end of every winter semester.

Miscellaneous Events: Faculty debates, scholarship information meetings, and a variety of other speakers/events.
