Her Excellency Mathilde Mukantabana has been ambassador to the U.S. since 2013, her first diplomatic position. Mukantabana is also nonresident ambassador to Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. A member of the Tutsi group, she lost her family in the 1994 Rwandan Genocide while she was teaching history at Cosumnes River College in Sacramento. In response, she started a social work program in 1999 at the National University of Rwanda and co-founded and became president of the Friends of Rwanda Association. In 2013, Mukantabana was an executive producer of the Rwandan Night, a documentary on the genocide. She married Alexandre Kimenyi, who died in 2010, and they are the parents of three children.
