Jeremy C. Pope

Jeremy C. Pope studies what Americans actually believe about politics, and how constitutional design shapes the outcomes we actually see. He has been a member of the political science faculty at Brigham Young University since 2004.

His research runs along three lines. The first asks what partisanship really is — whether the polarization Americans worry about is a story about ideology at all, or something closer to team loyalty, and why the difference matters. The second is about the American Founding, using voting records from the Constitutional Convention to ask what the framers were actually deciding, and what their compromises mean today. The third concerns the American family: how its structure is changing, how Americans understand those changes, and where public policy touches them.

He is the author or co-author of four books, including Founding Factions: How Majorities Shifted and Aligned to Shape the U.S. Constitution (with Shawn Treier, University of Michigan Press, 2020) and Culture War? The Myth of a Polarized America (with Morris P. Fiorina and Samuel J. Abrams). Partisanship Reconsidered, an edited volume with Christopher Karpowitz (2026). His articles have been published in the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, the British Journal of Political Science, and Public Opinion Quarterly, among others.

With Christopher Karpowitz he founded and co-directs the American Family Survey, an annual national survey of 3,000 Americans now in its twelfth year. He is a co-principal investigator of the Cooperative Election Study, a Faculty Fellow in Constitutional Government at the Wheatley Institute, and a Senior Scholar at the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy. He serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Political Science.

He teaches American Heritage, political parties, and courses on the Founding and on polarization. He also writes for general audiences at Good Authority and the Deseret News.
