Below are some classes you may want to consider as you create your schedule for winter semester:
POLI 319R section 002: Urban Government
Cities are the level of government that you interact with the most in your daily life. It's also the level where your individual efforts can have the greatest impact, and yet, local governments are often ignored by political scientists and poli sci majors even as they deal with several hot-button issues such as policing and crime, homelessness, housing affordability, and K-12 education. Given the unique economic and political environment that local governments operate in, their politics differ significantly from the politics of Congress and the Presidency and even state governments.
If you want to better understand the nature of local politics and become empowered to have an impact in city and K-12 governance, you are encouraged to register to take the Urban and Local Politics section of POLI 319r this coming Winter semester. In this class, you’ll learn about the development of city government in the US and then begin to examine foundational theories and key factors for understanding local politics. With this knowledge, you'll explore policy issues of particular concern to municipalities and local governments and have the opportunity to evaluate potential policy proposals to address an issue facing your hometown or closest urban city center.
This class will be taught MW 2-3:15pm by Professor Adam Dynes.
POLI 359R: Democracy and Autocracy
Is the world currently facing a global democratic recession? In tis class, we will answer this question and others concerning democracy and autocracy. Through this class, students will learn he skills to define and measure democracy while also becoming familiar with major theories explaining the emergence of democracies and autocracies. Students will also learn why some autocrats use violence or other modes of repression, how they manipulate elections, and why some of these regimes fail while others survive. This course will be taught MW 3:30-4:45 by Professor Darin Self.
POLI 379R: Open-Source Intelligence
Interested in a career in intelligence? See yourself in the CIA, DIA, NSA, DHS, or FBI? Professor Brad Bruton, with 40 years in the USG and over 14 years as an intelligence trainer, is coming to BYU winter semester to teach a course in open-source intelligence. This one-credit hour seminar meets only 4 times, on Tuesday 17 Jan, Thurs 19 Jan, Tues 24 Jan, and Thurs 26 Jan from 5-8:30. During his two weeks in Provo, Prof. Bruton will be available to meet with students and offer career advice. This is the same course that Dr. Bruton teaches in the Intelligence Community as a lead instructor and senior subject matter expert. Take advantage of this unique opportunity!

POLI 398: Career Lecture Series (previously POLI 298)
The class consists of a weekly outside speaker who has previously earned their degree in political science from BYU and is now gainfully employed in the "real world." The speakers typically discuss their experience at BYU and how their studies in the political science department prepared them for the career that they currently have. Aside from simply being interesting, our hope is that you also gain greater exposure to the wide variety of careers that are available for students who graduate from our department. In other words, this class will help you answer the perennial Thanksgiving dinner question from your relatives, "What are you going to do with a political science degree?" We have in the past heard from people who work in international diplomacy, state and local government, management consulting, law, tech, non-profits, the military, and political campaigns. We intentionally bring a wide range of speakers with a diverse set of careers and skills.
Beyond exposure to these careers, you will also have the chance to ask the speakers questions about how they made the transition from BYU to a career, what types of graduate school they needed/wanted to obtain, and what types of skills employers are looking for right now.
This 1-credit class meets on Thursdays from 5-6pm and is taught by Professor Mike Barber

Yesterday, we launched our Election Forecasting Challenge, a contest to find the best collegiate election forecaster in the country. The challenge asks participants to predict who will win each of the upcoming Senate and House elections and only requires an email address to enter.
The students with the most accurate predictions at the end of the challenge will receive an interview for an internship at Kalshi. If a student predicts all of the races correctly, they'll also win $100,000!

Utah Office of Energy Development Spring Internship Position
The Utah Office of Energy Development will continue its paid Energy Pathways Internship program this January 2023. Backgrounds in energy are not required but we do look for individuals studying STEM, energy, environment, sustainability, urban planning, geography, or other related fields.
The Energy Pathways Intern will work within the State Energy Program (SEP). This position offers valuable insight into the complexities behind the industry, the nuances of energy policy and planning, and the experts behind the work.
This position is paid $15 per hour and will work 20 hours per week. Applications will be open from October 20 - November 3. Hybrid/telework options are available.
