What explains conflict and cooperation both within and between states? This program uses Europe as its laboratory to address these questions. We examine cases in international politics by traveling from London to Istanbul. Students will compare diverse political systems as well as international relationships as they have evolved across Europe. We contemplate the origins of the Cold War at the site where Stalin and Truman first met as well as its collapse at the Berlin Wall. We study civil conflict on location in Northern Ireland and Bosnia. We visit legislative assemblies, international organizations, and the sites of great turning points in history. These visits will help us examine diverse forms of democracy, the rise and fall of fascism and communism, and the origins of the modern international system.
