Join us for GRAMA 101, a free webinar on requesting public records in Utah, April 23, 12-1 pm.

There are countless public records out there. Police reports, budget documents, e-mails of public officials and more. Our rule of thumb is that if taxpayer dollars touch it, there's probably a record about it you can request.

If you are new to Utah's Government Records Access and Management Act, or GRAMA, then you will want to tune into our free webinar on April 23, 12-1 pm.

We will go through the basics of filing GRAMA requests and offer advice on how to write them to most effectively get the records you are after. We'll also talk about how to fight records request denials and teach you about the rights you have to public records in Utah.

The BYU Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy (CSED) is now accepting new applicants for their undergraduate fellowship during the 2024-2025 school year! 
 
Each semester, some of BYU’s brightest students have the opportunity to work closely with faculty and other students, researching the latest political science data and practicing new research methods. Participating in the CSED Research Lab allows students to better their research skills and implement their own research ideas. Through hands-on experience, engaging discussions, and seminars from political science experts and professionals, CSED Fellows receive a rich educational experience in this 1-credit hour class. Applicants must have completed POLI 200, and the completion of POLI 328 is strongly encouraged.

BYU's Political Affairs Society is now accepting officer applications for the 2024-2025 school year. BYUPAS serves to promote worthwhile extracurricular activities related to public affairs and is dedicated to serving students who have interests in applied politics by connecting them with alumni, faculty, and friends of the University.
We are looking for new officers who are committed to helping students expand their network and knowledge of career-advancing resources and want to leave a legacy by way of helping improve the quality of BYUPAS as it currently exists.
Officers are expected to attend weekly planning meetings, as well as attend club events. Additionally, each officer has their own expected roles to fill outside of planning events for the club. Officers are anticipated to spend about 5-6 hours monthly working on club-related activities.

Assistant Podcast Producer for
Constant Wonder on BYUradio

BYUradio is looking for driven people with very strong academic records, wide-ranging interests, strong research and communication skills, and most especially, the capacity to recognize and shape stories. 

Assistant producers help build stories from brainstorming to finished final production. They schedule guests, read books and other materials, prep interviews, and help edit and shape audio into compelling stories. No technical experience with audio software is required. 

Constant Wonder shares encounters with awe and wonder found in art, science, history, nature, medicine, and more. Our stories nudge the listener to remember that the universe is at once vast and also intimate and caring. 

The pay begins at $14 per hour, with a clear path to quick pay raises, and students are expected to work at least 15 hours per week. Interested students should send a resume, cover letter, and writing sample to tennery.norton@byu.edu and eric.schulzke@byu.edu

Student Assistant for Political Behavior

Political Behavior is looking for a detail-oriented assistant to help facilitate communication with political science scholars around the world. Responsibilities include clerical support, managing spreadsheets, compiling lists of potential new reviewers, monitoring social media accounts, and directing our reviewer appreciation program. Research Assistants for Prof. Selway

Professor Joel Selway is seeking two research assistants for a project looking at the effect of ethnic structure on various social, economic, and political outcomes. Applicants will need to be competent in Stata. They should have taken Poli 300 (formerly Poli 328) or an equivalent. Interest in ethnicity & nationalism, political economy, civil war and violence, and democracy will be pluses. Pay is $15/hour, and students will be expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.

The Liberal Arts Advisement Center has moved!
The Liberal Arts Advisement Center, previously located in 1041 JFSB, has recently started a renovation project that will span the next several months. Because of this, the advisement center front desk has been temporarily moved to 3101 JFSB. Additionally, Megan Hancock, the academic advisor for political science, has been relocated to 2122 WVB (West View Building). For class planning, graduation questions, major/minor changes, general academic questions, or to schedule an appointment with Megan, students can contact the front desk at 801-422-3541 or 3101 JFSB.

TurnUp is hiring students at Brigham Young University for a paid summer voter registration internship opportunity with a $3,000 stipend.

Interns will perform 40 hours per week of work over the course of 10 weeks and will conduct high-traffic canvassing to register young people to vote.

This opportunity is fully remote but students must be located in AZ, MI, MT, NV, OH, PA, or WI. Each intern will be responsible for locating and engaging with potential voters in high-traffic areas (malls, parks, transit stations, etc.), at local events (fairs, block parties, etc.), and registering them to vote. As part of the internship experience, interns will receive comprehensive education from experienced organizers on voter registration and engagement. TurnUp will also provide the physical materials and supervision necessary to conduct frequent and successful voter registration activities. All voter registration activities are non-partisan.

Civic Synergy is looking for participants ages 18-30 from all sides of the political, ideological spectrum (Democrats, Republicans, Independents, etc.) to join in discussions about some of the most critical issues facing America today. From early June to mid-July, over the course of 6 sessions, you will have the chance to propose real, tractable solutions to address pressing issues, while preserving economic development, with a politically diverse group of peers. Throughout the program, you will work collaboratively with your team, aiming to propose policies addressing a specific issue of your choice (education or strengthening our republic).
 
Through the program, you will not only discuss pragmatic policy proposals that you'll be able to present to members of Congress, think tanks, and other organizations, but you'll also build the toolkit to have productive conversations and collaborate with those across the aisle.
 
The Summer 2023 program cohorts will meet at the following times:

Fall Fellowship Internships

Our program offers a unique opportunity for students to gain experience in public service and leadership. Unlike a standard internship, our fellows work directly with senior advisors and cabinet members on a wide variety of initiatives. Importantly, they are given direct exposure to our policy development and budgeting process that takes place from August through December.
 
Governor's Office fellows are compensated at $15 per hour for their service from August to December (i.e. we ask for a 5-month commitment). This experience helps prepare students for future careers in public service—over 80% of former participants have received full-time employment offers after their time with us.

The SENIOR RESEARCH SUPPORT ASSOCIATE in Political Science will assist three professors with their research and class-related needs.  Responsibilities will include assisting with research by engaging in data analysis, conducting computer simulations, aiding in data collection, coordinating research assistants, and assisting with the preparation of experiments and surveys.  Will also perform general administrative duties, including processing expenses, organizing seminars/conferences, and assisting with class preparation. This individual will be working with the methodologists - Daniel Hidalgo, Richard Nielsen, and In Song Kim.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in gaining research experience in quantitative social science, especially for those who plan on seeking an advanced degree in the social sciences.  Past associates have been accepted into top Ph.D. programs in political science.
