Political Science News
New Fall 2022 Course Offerings:

We have just added a new class to the fall schedule. POLI 318: Campaigns and Elections. This course analyzes the electoral process in the United States, including history, significance in governance, campaign strategy, finance, media role, etc. with emphasis on the 2022 elections.

POLI 349R, Section 1: The Politics of Care
In Matthew 25:31-46, Jesus pronounces the “Judgement of the Nations” and centers His criteria on how well we care for people who are hungry, thirsty, strangers, naked, sick, and imprisoned. In this class we consider what that means in modern times. Readings will draw from both philosophical and empirical approaches and will explore both the possibilities and limits of the state, civil society, and personal action in caring for “the least of these.” (Taught by Professor Jessica Preece)

POLI 398: Speaker Series on Careers
We encourage all of our majors to enroll in POLI 298/398 at some point during their time at BYU.

Poli 398 is a 1-credit class that meets once per week on Thursdays from 5-6pm. The class counts as 1 elective credit towards the completion of the major. It had previously been numbered Poli 298. We've recently altered the numbering to 398 to allow it to count as an elective credit. Nothing else about the course has changed (i.e., it isn't more difficult now that it starts with a "3" instead of a "2").

The class consists of a weekly outside speaker who has previously earned their degree in political science from BYU and is now gainfully employed in the "real world." The speakers typically discuss their experience at BYU and how their studies in the political science department prepared them for the career that they currently have. Aside from simply being interesting, our hope is that you also gain greater exposure to the wide variety of careers that are available for students who graduate from our department. In other words, this class will help you answer the perennial Thanksgiving dinner question from your relatives, "What are you going to do with a political science degree?" We have in the past heard from people who work in international diplomacy, state and local government, management consulting, law, tech, non-profits, the military, and political campaigns. We intentionally bring a wide range of speakers with a diverse set of careers and skills.

Beyond exposure to these careers, you will also have the chance to ask the speakers questions about how they made the transition from BYU to a career, what types of graduate school they needed/wanted to obtain, and what types of skills employers are looking for right now.

We offer the course every fall and winter semester, including this Fall 2022 semester. Please consider enrolling.
(Taught by Professor Michael Barber)
8/25 Utah 2022 Election Security Program with Senator Romney
You are all invited to an updated free virtual election cybersecurity workshop for Utah and adjacent states, at 1:30 pm Mountain time on Thursday, August 25th.

Speakers will include Senator Mitt Romney; Kim Wyman, the new Senior Election Security Lead at Homeland Security; and elected officials and experts from around the region and from Washington DC.
BYU’s 3rd Annual Richard L. Evans Memorial Lecture is just around the corner! On Thursday, Sept 15 at 7:30 in the Hinckley Center Assembly Hall, on what should be a lovely September evening, Dr. Yolanda Pierce, Dean of the Howard University Divinity School, will deliver her lecture titled “Cradle and Cauldron: Early Black American Religion and Interfaith Possibilities.” Her lecture is designed to provide a vital Black American perspective on interfaith relations both historically and at present. Given the university’s and college’s strong commitment to a vision of REB/DCI, attendance at this lecture promises to both offer helpful historical insight and make an important visual statement about broad student support for cultivating a community of belonging here at BYU.

Paid Internship at the United Utah Party
This position is perfect for college students looking to build up their resume and learn a plethora of technical skills that can be useful in many different careers, especially careers in the political world. It's a great opportunity and safe place to learn and make yourself more valuable to future potential employers. Most importantly, there's always room for growth. The more you want to do, the more you can do for the party. This is not a “coffee-fetching” type of internship, you will actively be doing things that directly help with the party’s many goals.

In addition, working in this position means that you will be working directly with the Chair and Vice-Chair of the party, and be part of the bi-weekly executive committee meetings. This means that through osmosis, and direct learning, you'll be introduced to a variety of political soft skills that are a vital part of building relationships in the public and private sector, skills that you only learn by doing.

Responsibilities:

- Working with Nation Builder (A program you'll likely use again in anything involving politics, campaigns, or any type of organization that requires supporters to be successful).

- Drafting and sending email blasts to supporters.

- Being available to answer the party phone (Callers range from people considering joining the party, to reporters asking for interviews, to potential candidates wanting to affiliate with us).

- Staffing the office.

- Mailing merch.

- Reserving venues.

- Format spreadsheets.

- Making calls on behalf of the party.

- Aid in organizing and setting up events such as parades, caucus meetings, county conventions, and state-wide events.

- Help with anything else that may come up.

Learning opportunities:

- Learn about organizing and growing a grassroots organization.

- Become familiar with the organization, purpose, and process of a political party.

- Learn and observe skills in communicating with others, especially with people in the public sector.

- Front row seats for when politically significant events and changes happen.

It will require 8-12 hours/wk, paid by the hour.

Note: It is not a requirement to be registered with the party to be accepted for this position

We are looking to fill this position sooner than later, so please contact us ASAP if you are interested:
