Governor Cox Town Hall MOVED to October 24, 2022
 
The Wheatley Institute along with BYU Office of Civic Engagement are excited to host a town hall meeting with Utah Governor, Spencer Cox. The BYU campus community is welcome to attend and can register by clicking the button below. Please note the change of date.

POLI 359R: Democracy and Autocracy
 
As you plan your Winter schedule, we want to make you aware of a new class that will be offered. Poli 359R: Democracy and Autocracy is a 3-credit course that fulfills an upper-division elective for any version of our majors. It also fulfills distributional requirements of the International Strategy version of the major (formerly the emphasis). The course will be taught by Professor Darin Self.
 
Course Description: Is the world currently facing a global democratic recession? In this class we will answer this question and others concerning democracy and autocracy. Through this class students will learn the skills to define and measure democracy while also becoming familiar with major theories explaining the emergence of democracies and autocracies. Students will also learn why some autocrats use violence or other modes of repression, how they manipulate elections, and why some of these regimes fail while others survive.

Seriatim Journal is a student-run political journal that hopes to support an engaged citizenry by fostering an open marketplace of ideas and encouraging the productive exchange of political speech. We hope to provide an avenue through which the genuine political speech of undergraduate students may be better heard and shared with the community at large. By using academic papers and original work, we hope to foster greater meaning to students’ work inside the classroom by making it accessible to a wider audience.

Research Fellow Position
Assist faculty members at Stanford Law School conducting timely and policy-relevant research in empirical social science, including economists John J. Donohue and Daniel Kessler. Designed for graduating seniors or recent college or master’s program graduates, the fellowship provides a unique opportunity for those considering graduate school, law school, and/or business school in the future.

Full-time, starting Summer 2023. Fellowships last for one year, with an option to renew for a second year by mutual agreement of the professor and the fellow.

The deadline for the first round is 7:00AM PST on Monday, October 17, 2022. The deadline for the second round will be decided in late October, depending on the needs of the program.

Spring Governor's Office Fellowships
The Governor's Office is opening applications for the spring fellowship program. These are the positions they are actively recruiting for:
  1. Communications (led by Jennifer Napier-Pearce)
  2. State and Federal Policy (co-Led by Neil Abercrombie and Gordon Larsen)
  3. Constituent Services (led by Mike Mower)
  4. Legal Analysis and Research (led by Daniel O’Bannon)
  5. State Innovation (led by Rich Saunders)
  6. Education and General Services (led by Brittney Cummins)
This program is compensated at a rate of $14/hr. and comes with an intensive 2-day training experience. However, please note that they are requesting a 6-month commitment from students (i.e. January to June). 
The application portal for the spring closes on Friday, October 14, 2022. 

Applications for all 2023 cohorts (Spring, Summer, and Fall) are now open! 

The LGBTQ Victory Institute brings outstanding LGBTQ college students to Washington, DC, for an 8- or 10-week intensive leadership program, including an internship with an LGBTQ-friendly member of Congress or caucus. This is a paid opportunity and includes a living stipend, housing in DC, travel to/from DC, transportation stipend, and travel/registration to the International LGBTQ Leaders Conference in December 2023.  

The internship is open to current LGBTQ undergraduate students of all genders, orientations, abilities, races, and political affiliations, including people with majors other than political science. If you’re interested in public service, building your leadership skills, and working on advocacy, this is the internship for you!  
Scoville Fellowship in DC for Recent Grads

Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowship is a highly competitive national fellowship program that provides recent college and graduate school alumni with the funding and opportunity to work with one of two dozen participating institutions in Washington, DC, including leading think tanks and advocacy groups that focus on international security and diplomacy issues.
