CIA
Host: Mike
Location: CIA, at the BYU Barlow Center, can’t go to Langley, Virginia this year
No need for the following this year, but for future years, when we go to Langley again:
For each person who wants to attend this briefing, you can send me:
Full name (first name, middle name, last name)
Social Security Number
Our contact at the CIA will circle back with info for how to arrive day-of, but a few quick logistics notes:
It’s *not* located near a metro so students will need to either drive or take a Uber/Lyft/taxi to get there
Plan on arriving 15 mins early to clear security
Below are arrival instructions. In addition to the recruiter, there will be 2, maybe 3, BYU alumni to greet you and the students.
Briefing start time: 2 PM
Address: CIA Headquarters,1000 Colonial Farm Rd, McLean, VA 22101
Point of Contact: (Note – this number is only if you are running late.) Please call Anna at 703-482-3364 if you are running late. She will be meeting you at the Visitors Center and will not be at that phone after 12:15 as that is the point at which she will leave her desk to walk to the Visitors Center to meet you and the group.
Please plan to arrive 30 minute early to allow for security/processing at the Visitors Center.
Everyone will need to bring a US Government issued photo ID (drivers license or passport).
You will not be able to bring in any of these items: cellphones or “smart” aka wifi-enabled devices (this includes apple watches, fitbits, wifi-connective headphones). So either plan on leaving them in your car or back at your hotel/residence.
When you arrive:
Turn into the main entrance of CIA Headquarters.
As you drive towards the entrance, you’ll see a sign indicating visitors should pull over to the right.
Pull off to the right and stop at the camera/speaker and present your photo ID and explain that you are there for a tour and will be meeting your escort at the Visitor’s Center.
The officer on the intercom will buzz you through and you can pull forward and park in front of the Visitors Center.
A point of contact/escort will be waiting for you at the Visitors Center. You will enter and one-by-one present your photo ID and receive a Visitor Badge. Once everyone has their badge, your POC will escort you on foot to the main entrance. It’s about a 5 minute walk so please let me know if there is anyone in the group with mobility impairment and a shuttle can be arranged.
I was also reminded and given plea that everyone leave *all* electronics behind. If even one phone, USB, Apple watch, Fitbit, etc. slips through – it will delay the entire group. Everyone will go through rigorous security and then, if anything is found, that one item will need to be taken back to the car (which entails a walk to and from the car from the point of security) while everyone else (including the CIA escorts) waits. The entire group doesn’t clear if ANY electronics are found on any one person.
Also confirmed are:
BYU alum representing multiple career tracks will be on a panel (all of these BYU alum have served in DC as well as overseas in embassies) – so if the students can read up and watch the videos, they’ll be able to ask more informed questions and make best use of the time.
The person from the Outreach and Talent office will be there and looks forward to making official introductions with you/Kirk/etc. so that as long as BYU wants to make this a standing session for each year’s group, they can do so.
For context and to inform discussion / questions, I would suggest that students:
Either I, Matthew Clarke, or another administrator will attend this briefing, and we will meet the student recruiter who will be leading the briefing.
If possible, I need the names and SSNs by, say, middle of the week of April 22-29, 2018 to share with our point of contact. He’ll then pass it to the security team at the CIA (all the info needs to be run through their security system in advance of their arrival).
Instructions:
CIA Headquarters visit – Friday, 10 May 2019, 10:00 am – 2:00p.m.Your group should arrive at the CIA visitor’s center between 9:45 – 10:00a.m. in order to allow adequate time to process onto the compound. Students, faculty and staff should arrive together at our Headquarters compound. Please advise on how your group will travel to Hqs (how many vehicles, chartered bus? If so we will need the bus drivers name, SS#, & POB as well)
Participants must bring a passport or driver’s license and be prepared to verify the last four numbers of their SSN upon arrival. Important: If a participant was born outside of the United States, they will need to present their US Passport or naturalization certificate when they arrive. Only those US citizens whose names and social security numbers were provided in advance will be allowed to proceed onto the CIA campus. Non-US citizens cannot visit our compound.
The passage of the real ID Act in July 2014 restricts the use of certain state-issued driver’s licenses from gaining entry into federal buildings. Specifically, please visit the following website: https://www.dhs.gov/real-id-enforcement-brief to ascertain States currently in compliance with Real ID. If any attendees have a driver’s license from a non-compliant State they should bring another form of acceptable ID, e.g. US passport.
Participants may not bring backpacks, purses, or electronic devices. Cameras and photography are strictly prohibited.
In regards to electronic devices, attendees often forget about their cell phones or if they are wearing/carrying a Fitbit or other form of GPS in his/her watch, so please remind them about leaving such devices on the bus or at home.
All vehicles entering or exiting from the Agency installation are subject to inspection and search by authorized persons.
Please have participants wear comfortable shoes, eat and drink prior to the visit and bring cash or a credit card if they would like to purchase something from our Agency gift store.
